The IC Principle

“It appears, so the cousins say, that there is a measure of distance used in the backwoods of North Carolina known as the IC. When I first heard of this measurement of distance, I asked, “What in the world is an IC?” They responded by telling me that if a traveler stopped and asked a local resident for the directions to a specific location, such as the Johnson place, that traveler might just hear that the location was just three IC’s down the road. When the traveler would ask what they meant, the local resident would explain that if the traveler would go as far as they could see, and then from that point, if they would go as far as they could see, and then from that point go as far as they could see, then they would be at the Johnson’s.”
